Conscious Parenting using Astrology - Mental Processing

Mental Processing, the Moon and Mercury

By Babette Lacy

Mercury is associated with our ability to learn, communicate and process information. The moon is our inner world, our emotions, our internal self. Together they allow us to process information mentally and emotionally, intellectually and intuitively. The speed a planet is traveling as we are born impacts the strength of the planetary influence. We rate the travel of Mercury as fast if it rises before the sun in a natal chart, or slow depending on if it is after the sun in a natal chart. We rate the travel of the moon as fast or slow depending on whether it is traveling faster or slower than the average moon speed. So a person can have a fast Mercury and a fast Moon, fast Mercury and slow Moon, slow Mercury and fast Moon, or slow Mercury and slow Moon.

We tend to want to put labels on everything, including our children. They get labeled fast or slow, a quick study or not (“oh, he or she is kinda slow”). They may have a fast processor or a slower processor, it is a little like computer speed. Everyone processes information in a different way, and it will certainly have to do with speed of Mercury and the Moon in the natal chart. I am concerned with the labeling of children in general, sometimes a label is applied at a very early age and it tends to stay with a person throughout a lifetime. Our formative years are so important to the image we have of ourselves for the rest of our lives. I’m particularly concerned with the high use of medications that are being prescribed for children that have been labeled ADD or ADHD. I would want to know if my child is a fast fast and is being diagnosed by a slow slow.

The glyph for Mercury looks like Venus with antennae. To see if Mercury rises before the Sun in a chart, we look at the Ascendant line in the chart. This is the position that would be 9:00 on a clock (see the chart for the glyph of Mercury, it is next to this line). If you rotate all of the planets clockwise to this point, you can see if Mercury would cross this line before the Sun (fast), or after the Sun (slow). The sun is the glyph that is a circle with a dot in the center. To obtain a chart, you can go to your local metaphysical bookstore, contact a professional astrologer, or go to an internet site that provides free charts (I like www.alabe.com).

The sign influences how Mercury and Moon (intellect and intuition, mental and emotional) function as well. Again, Mercury is our way of thinking and communicating, so this relates to mental processing. When we look at the sign Mercury is in, the fire signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) are about action, they will be quick, especially Aries. They want to move into the action of doing something about the issue at hand, whether they have thought through it completely or not. The air signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) are known for their intellect, they will process rapidly. They will study in depth and need to know all about something that interests them. They want to explore all the angles, they love to learn. The earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn) are logical, practical and grounded. They will think through how pragmatic something is, how purposeful and realistic it is. They may seem to be a little slower because they will be more apt to look at the consequences of the action and decision. The water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) are the emotional signs. They will use their intuition, “how something feels”, more than logic and intellect. When this is developed it is very accurate, they are in tune with the subtle energies.

When you combine the planet with the signs element, you begin to see how your child processes information. For example, my oldest daughter and I both have fast fast. Her Mercury is in Gemini, an air sign, making her very fast. In any given conversation, she will be two or three subjects ahead of me.

Let’s look at the moon and your child’s emotional processing. When we evaluate the sign the Moon is in, the fire signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) as you can imagine have fiery emotions. They may be quick to anger and just as quick to get over it. They will be more likely to tell you all about sources of irritation. They are likely to be acting out more about issues that are of concern, they want to do something about it. When the Moon is in an air sign (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) your child will apply their knowledge (air is intellect) to an emotionally charged situation. They will think through it, they will ask a lot of questions. Sometimes air signs seem a little more distant emotionally for this reason. The earth sign Moons (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn) are the ones that tend to be level headed emotionally. They are practical and grounded emotionally. They may be less likely to be shaken by their emotions. If the Moon is in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) you will have a highly emotional child. This child needs your understanding and emotional support. They need tools for dealing with their emotions. They will also be very in tune with the emotions of others, often taking on the emotions of others.

When we look at the element (fire, air, earth, and water) a planet is in, it gives us a generality. It gives us a broad picture of how a person will react, however, each sign will react uniquely as well. Each chart is absolutely unique, just as each individual is entirely distinctive. As a parent, using astrology as an additional tool allows you to have a depth of understanding that is more complete, well rounded, and extensive. Astrology is a powerful way to create a profile of an individual, it can help you determine your child’s strengths or particular learning style. It can also help you assess learning challenges your child may be facing. Astrology as a diagnostic tool empowers a parent to be there for a child in the way they require their needs to be met.

Parenting - Sun in Houses

CONSCIOUS PARENTING USING ASTROLOGY

Where does your child shine the brightest?

By Babette Lacy

“YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE, MY ONLY SUNSHINE, YOU MAKE ME HAPPY….” If you are a parent, you’ve probably sung the words to your beloved little ones many times. We all have natural gifts that appear in some area of life- our assets. One of the ways to assess your child’s strengths is to look at the sun in their astrological chart. I’m not going to be talking about the sign their sun is in, you already know the traits of your child’s sun sign. The sun in your child’s astrological chart is the most visible; it’s where they are most radiant, it is where they are going to shine the brightest. The sun sign is “how” they show up, the house placement is “where” they show up.

Where is your child most likely to be recognized? For the answer to that question, we look at the house placement around the zodiacal wheel. Each house is associated with a different area of life. A person will often have a career associated with the placement of the sun’s house. To get started you may obtain an astrological chart from your local metaphysical bookstore, your local astrologer, or free websites such as www.alabe.com. As you view the chart, the first house occupies the space that would be between 8 and 9 o’clock on a clock. The second house occupies the space between 7 and 8 o’clock, and so on around the wheel. You would end at the 12th house with the space between 9 and 10 o’clock. Now let’s take a tour of the astrological houses.

1st house Sun - The first house relates to the ego, the personality, and the outward persona. A child with a first house sun will be very charismatic, very charming, very confident, they will be able to convince you of anything. They may be focused on the self rather than on getting along with others. Often celebrities and politicians have this placement.

2nd house Sun – The second house is associated with money and material possessions. Children with this placement will care about “their things”, often being possessive of toys. They will work hard to earn money and the things they want in life. These children are also inclined to need emotional security in addition to financial security, they need you to provide a solid foundation. They are also concerned with the aesthetics of their surroundings, and both girls and boys may ask to decorate their rooms in some way. Adults with this placement are the ones that we might label materialistic, and they are usually good money managers.

3rd house Sun - The third house is related to communication, mental ability, and learning. It is also related to short journeys, your neighborhood, and brothers and sisters. As you have probably already surmised, this child will have a sharp mind and good communication skills. They will love to learn and be very inquisitive. They will be adept at communication of all types; verbal, written, and internet communication. They will also be close to their siblings, often defaulting to their wishes.

4th house Sun – The fourth house is correlates to personal foundations, home and family, and the individual’s mother. The child with this placement is most comfortable at home and will likely prefer to be at home rather than to be out socializing. They may very well be a fantastic host to visitors in their own home. For this child their home, or room, is their castle. Their goals in life might be to simply have a home and family of their own, with everything else being of secondary importance.

5th house Sun – The fifth house is linked to sports, speculation, creativity, children, and love affairs. If your child has a fifth house sun, they will have no problem expressing their true nature. They are likely to be athletic, artistic or theatrical. They are very comfortable center stage.

6th house Sun – The sixth house designates work and co-workers, being of service, attitudes toward those in lower socioeconomic groups, and interest in physical and mental health and well being. This child may want to take care of others in some way. This child may be very diligent in their daily tasks and chores. Often adults with this placement are in the vocational areas of ministry, counseling, and social service.

7th house Sun – The seventh house would refer to cooperative relationships and partnerships. A child with this placement would be concerned with their relationship with everyone. They do not favor being alone, they need others around. They would be people pleasers, being in sync with others is a motivator for this child. With this child, I would monitor their peer group since this will be of primary importance to them. As they grow older, their primary relationship partner is their world. They would be very focused on the other person, perhaps even domineering.

8th house Sun – The eighth house relates to sex, death and rebirth, regeneration, the mysteries of life, the occult, investments, and other people’s money. If your child has their sun in this house, they have strong emotions and likely psychic gifts as well. They would ask about the great mysteries in life, they would probe the depths of the unusual. They need to learn how to regenerate. They are also very adept at helping others transform their way of thinking and being. Since this house is also associated with sex, you will want to coach them about those issues early in life. They somehow connect with others in a financially beneficial way. Adults with this placement are often investors of other people’s money and assets.

9th house Sun – The ninth house sun aspires to higher education, is interested in other peoples religions, philosophies, ideals, and belief systems. The ninth house is also designated as the house of foreign travel and foreign cultures. A child with this placement will want to see the world and may have a talent for languages. They will have a genuine interest in learning. They will likely achieve the levels of higher education, perhaps even teach others.

10th house Sun – The attributes of the tenth house are ambition, aspirations, public image, honor, rank, authority figures, and responsibility. This child will be concerned with their standing in the world. They will set high standards for themselves. You will probably see them early on filling roles as president of clubs and organizations as school, they have a natural leadership ability. They will get noticed for their achievements. You can expect them to grow into very career focused adults.

11th house Sun – The eleventh house designates shared hobbies, group interests, communal causes and movements, and ideals for the future. This child will want to include everyone, they are the kids with 1585 friends on Facebook. They are popular and have a knack for steering crowds toward a higher ideal. They have a progressive outlook.

12th house Sun – The twelfth house is often difficult to describe because it is connected to the unconscious, the mystical, the metaphysical, psychic gifts. It is linked to psychology and psychiatry, positive and negative methods of escapism. It is also related to large institutions (prisons, hospitals, monasteries). A child with this placement will likely be very introspective, they need to have the parental support necessary to explore their true nature. This is sometimes known as the house of hidden qualities, they may not want to be seen in some way (escapism). It is harder for this child to be noticed or get the notoriety they deserve. Any planets in this house tend to indicate issues around how they were parented in early life. Please really get to know the psychology of this child, they need your support and understanding. People with this placement tend to have little ego, or exaggerated ego. Both Gandhi and Madonna have this placement. This child will be very intuitive and probably quite spiritual as well.

As parents, we watch with wonderment as our child’s assets unfold. We offer sports, dance, performing arts, book club, chess club and debate in an effort to help them to find themselves. Frequently we credit ourselves for their achievements, and agonize over any downfall. We lovingly guide them in a certain direction, and rather consistently they head through life on a different path. All too often it seems to both parent and child like a mismatch, like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Using astrology to learn where your child’s assets will emerge puts you ahead of the game. There will still be plenty of excitement watching them grow into their authentic individuality. Knowing where your child will shine the brightest gives you the opportunity to support and allow their true character and disposition, rather than impede it. You will have an opportunity to champion who they are, and also who they are not. All too recurrently, we are pigeonholed into an area of life that someone else has decided for us and we continue down that erroneous path until adulthood and our midlife crisis before we realize our true calling. The earlier we discover our direction, the greater the opportunity for success as a supporting parent and more importantly as a child striving for success and approval. We need to feed their bodies, their minds and their spirits.

Positive Power of Prayer

I have a wonderful TRUE story to share about a medical miracle that happened recently. I am going to change the names, but the story is very real.

I know this wonderful family from church, and I have grown to treasure each one of them. I have a strong connection with one of the younger members of the family, Dianne, she is a source of inspiration to everyone she meets. She is a beautiful role model to both younger and older women because she has such a sense of herself. She is very clear on how she wants to show up in life. I have always admired her, she has such wisdom for her age. I have also been on a committee with one of the Aunts in the family, Penelope. We have been working on an annual women’s event. She has been sharing about the family events since I see her on a more regular basis.

Dianne had been emailing all of us lately for loving support during the treatment of her mother, Coleen, for a cancerous growth. The doctors were not optimistic, and the family was very upset. In fact, the news had been that of gloom and doom with associated timelines on longevity. Coleen was scheduled for surgery to remove the growth, then the follow up treatment would follow. Everyone had concerns as Coleen also takes care of her mother.

As Aunt Penelope reported the progress, there were tears in her eyes. Coleen has worked as a clerical staff member at a local school for a number of years. As she went into surgery, twenty some teachers gathered together in prayer for her health and well being. It seems that after the surgery, the follow up report showed NO indication of ANY cancerous growth. It was as if it had never been there. Coleen is clearly here to do more lightwork in the world. What a blessing to be given the gift of life twice.

As I heard this account, it was an astonishing reminder of the ABSOLUTE POWER of POSITIVE PRAYER and its ability to heal. It is a magnificent reminder to continue praying for one another and for our world, it does matter, it does make a difference!

X-treme Kindness

I love to watch how the universe shows up and reminds us that there is love and beauty all around us. Who would have thought it would show up and the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles)? I was renewing my license plates a few weeks ago, they needed it since my front plate was a little bent up. As I got my new plate with the letters VXK, I remarked to the clerk that I was trying to figure out how I was going to come up some words to remember it by. Without skipping a beat, the clerk at window #5 said “Well, there is always something like Very X-treme Kindness”. I loved it immediately, and so it is Very X-treme Kindness! That is a beautiful energy to keep with me as I drive, and I want to thank the lady at window number five.

MOON SIGNS AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

CONSCIOUS PARENTING USING ASTROLOGY

MOON SIGNS AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

By Babette Lacy

I can’t help but giggle when I hear a parent make a comment like “Well, kids don’t come with an instruction manual!” As an astrologer, I believe they do. As a parent, I can empathize with the frustration of parents who are trying to gain some insight, and I can also empathize with the frustration of teens and children who feel misunderstood. I’m thrilled that astrology has become so main stream that everyone is well versed on the traits of sun sign astrology, however, I’m much more interested in an individual’s moon sign.

A professional astrologer looks at about ten planets, a number of asteroids, and the placement of planets around the zodiacal wheel for a complete view of an individual. Each planet in an astrological chart describes a different part of our psyche, our personality, or our way of being. The moon in a chart is given almost as much importance as a person’s sun sign because the two luminaries “shed the most light” on an individual’s make up. The way the two work in harmony with one another is that the sun shines outwardly, revealing the personality, the ego, and the outward persona. The moon on the other made to feel comfortable and secure. I would prefer getting to know the inner person, rather than the ego reflected out into the world. The outward persona will be highly visible anyway. I want to see the vulnerable underbelly, I want to know what is not shown to the world.

In his book “Emotional Intelligence”, author Daniel Goleman talks about the idea that it is more important to be emotionally intelligent than it is to have a high IQ. He claims that it is imparitive that we teach our children how to handle their emotional self. We attain greater emotional balance as we grow older. The best gift we can give our children is a greater understanding of who they truly are, and to give them effective tools for dealing with their emotions.

To determine your child’s moon sign it is important to have an accurate horoscope cast. You can obtain a chart from a professional astrologer, your local metaphysical bookstore, or online sites that produce free charts. Once you have that in hand, much will be revealed. You may be able to tell without the chart. Here is a little tour around the wheel:

MOON IN ARIES-(FIRE)-your child is rather fast and fiery with their emotional reactions, quickly expressed, quickly forgotten, no hidden emotions, and expressed before thought about. They are quick to fall in and out of love, and highly value their independence. Your child’s challenge is to harness their emotional energy and channel it into positive pursuits. Celebrity Example-Angelina Jolie

MOON IN TAURUS – (EARTH)-sensual and steady emotionally, your child prefers solid and steady relationships. They like affection and life’s comforts, a cozy, safe, calm atmosphere, they like emotional and financial security, and they are attached to their home, garden and possessions. They may be a collector, they are likely described as determined, stubborn and possessive. Your child’s challenge is to broaden their horizons and to take risks on occasion. Celebrity Example-Prince Charles

MOON IN GEMINI-(AIR)-your child is multi-faceted, they crave variety, mental stimulation, and an active social life. They are a flirt and may be involved in more than one profession. Your child needs to be constantly on the go, may have a difficult time with commitment, therefore your child’s emotional life may be a little chaotic. One of their challenges is to focus their energies or they tend to be quite fragmented, help them find a creative way to express their multi-faceted nature. Celebrity Example- Jim Carrey

MOON IN CANCER - (WATER) – your child is sensitive and caring, very much in tune with the needs of others. Some children mask this well with a hard exterior “shell”. Your child may be involved with caring for people as a profession. They have a sharp memory, keen intuition and natural psychic ability. They are happiest at home and would also enjoy working from home. Celebrity Example – Tom Cruise

MOON IN LEO – (FIRE) – your child is warm and passionate and takes command emotionally. Your child needs support, love and loyalty from those they love. They are attracted to all that is noble, generous, and aristocratic. They are natural leaders and they are comfortable in the limelight. They are possessive and roar loudly if someone threatens their territory. Celebrity Example – Paul McCartney

MOON IN VIRGO – (EARTH) - your child likes to be the teacher; their goal is to change others for the better. They are intelligent, articulate and organized. They drive themselves and others to attain perfect standards. Their challenge is to lighten up and accept themselves and others as they are. Celebrity Example – John F. Kennedy

MOON IN LIBRA- (AIR) - your child is most charming in an elegant, harmonious atmosphere. They like all things in balance, they do not care for extremes. Your child is relationship-oriented and may have a difficult time being alone. Like other air sign moons, they think before they feel. Your child may not be able to recognize the emotional needs of others. Your child’s challenge is to learn to lean on themselves first, then they can have excellent partnerships and friendships. Celebrity Example – Leonardo DiCaprio

MOON IN SCORPIO – (WATER) – your child is very passionate and intense on an emotional level. They have a need for power and control. They may have a dramatic emotional life full of suspicion, jealousy, obsession and love. Your child likes to know about what is below the surface and they do well in the fields of investigative research, psychoanalysis and intuitive work. Your chilld’s challenge is temperance. Celebrity Example – Elizabeth Taylor

MOON IN SAGITTARIUS – (FIRE) – your child is optimistic, fun loving and full of wanderlust. They take everything with a grain of salt. Your child is in constant search of mental and spiritual stimulation. They love to explore new horizons, new cultures, and new philosophies. Your child’s challenge may be to settle down and stay in one place. Celebrity Example – Donald Trump

MOON IN CAPRICORN – (EARTH) – your child is very goal oriented and has a very strong drive to succeed. Structure and order make your child feel secure. They can be perceived as being cool and calculating. Your child takes duty and responsibility seriously. Their challenge is to balance fun with work. Celebrity Example— Brad Pitt

MOON IN AQUARIUS— (AIR)— your child is the happiest surrounded by a group of eclectic friends and may feel uneasy alone. They detest rigidity and scheduling. Demanding relationships and intense emotions turn them off. Your child needs plenty of space and they enjoy their freedom. Your child’s challenge is to connect deeply on an emotional level. Celebrity Example—Princess Diana

MOON IN PISCES—(WATER)— your child is happiest when expressing their creative imagination in the arts, healing, or spiritual professions. They are highly responsive and empathetic to other’s emotions, sometimes taking on the emotions of others. They are highly creative, imaginative, and intuitive and quite often need an anchor in reality. Places that are near water will sooth your child’s hyper-sensitive emotional side. Their challenge is to avoid escapism and reclusiveness. Celebrity Example—Elvis Presley

Once you understand how your children are “hard-wired” you’ll be better equipped to deal with family dynamics, issues with peers, and your child’s emotional needs. Parenting is challenging at best, having additional parenting tools is a must. By the way, the moon signs are applicable for spouses as well.
